Blockchain Health Information Exchange (BCHIE) Architecture

The blockchain health information exchange (BCHIE) architecture is a HIPAA compliant, advanced, market-driven disruptive technology designed and developed to ensure health information exchange (HIE) security, validity, nonrepudiation and patient matching by using Smart Contracts that are executed without human interaction.

Blockchain Health Information Exchange (BCHIE) architecture is the recognized leader and serves as the trusted framework designed to scale electronic health information exchanges nationwide and help ensure that health information networks, health care providers, health plans, individuals, and many more stakeholders have secure access and patient matching to their electronic health information when and where it is needed.

The Blockchain Health Information exchange (BCHIE) architecture is a HIPAA compliant, advanced, market-driven disruptive technology designed and developed to ensure health information exchange (HIE) security, validity, nonrepudiation, and patient matching by using Smart Contracts that are executed without human interaction.

Developed in 2017, the BCHIE leverages SHA 256 and SHA 512, where the margin of error virtually disappears. Using the BCHIE, the margin of error is 1 out of 2^256. This is the same standard that secures top-secret clearance for digital information.

Patient matching is inherent in BCHIE architecture.

Furthermore, BCHIE architecture provides a platform for advanced data analytics using artificial intelligence (AI) methods.

On June 27, 2019, One Publix Chart submitted the BCHIE architecture platform to CMS’s 2019 Call for Measures: “Medicare Promoting Interoperability Program Call for Measures[1] seeking to transform nationwide interoperability and health information exchange.

Question: What is the difference between health information exchanges (HIEs) and BCHIE?

Answer: Current HIE architecture uses 1970’s structured query language (SQL) technology which does not ensure non-repudiation. Using this 1970’s SQL technology as a base for current HIE architecture, processes like release of information, patient matching, privacy, and security, etc., all carry certain inherent risks, vulnerabilities, and margins of error.

Moreover, issues with current HIE’s include patient privacy, data security, data integration, and agreement between competing healthcare providers if a centralized database is used. Blockchain technology addresses these problems effectively.
